The work of Heriberto Nieves which we are presenting at the Museo de Arte de Ponce, has received universal recognition: through exhibitions in prestigious museums and galleries in Mexico, Venezuela, France and Finland. It is, indeed, a truly amazing body of work as it combines metal sculpture with tar, photography, plexiglas, enamels - surprising variety of media. Nieves’ concern with saving the planet takes the place of concern for individual salvation. We are not in the presence of a romantic seeking personal salvation, but a man who thinks in collective terms. In his work, Nieves interprets and expresses the need to preserve nature, which is increasingly at risk on our island. The saving of the moon, the planets, life itself, depends on saving the island. Otherwise, we must all perish together.
